Ridler, McLaren, and Safety
Build of the Week
What is the Ridler Award? Well it is awarded to the best custom car built each year at the Detroit Autorama. It is named after Don Ridler who back in the 1950’s, was approached by the Autorama to help grow the event itself. After a massive success, the award was dedicated to Don for all his achievements in growing the hot rod culture of the time.
Article of the Week
The McLaren P1 is one of the most sought after and expensive super cars ever made. McLaren is trying to follow that up with the W1. The name comes from McLaren F1 team member, Emerson Fittipaldi winning the 1974 World Drivers’ Championship. It’s been 50 years since that day, so the W1 is built for the 50th anniversary of that win. Is it also because McLaren are now leading the F1 Constructors championship???
Fun Fact of the Week
NASCAR, like many racing series, has struggled with a history of safety. After Dale Earnhardt died in 2001, Gary Nelson stepped up to vouch for driver safety. Read about his work here. Since then Dale Earnhardt Jr. wrote a book about the concussions he’s suffered and how that impacted racing. Check his book out here.
